Wisdom Tooth Surgery
What are Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom teeth are among the last set of molars on each side of the upper and lower jaws. They generally emerge between the age of 17 to 22.
Sometimes, the wisdom teeth may only partially erupt, or not erupt at all and stay buried beneath the gum tissue. This results in wisdom teeth that are “impacted” and must be removed to prevent further health complications.

Why Do You Need to Extract Your Wisdom Tooth?
The formation of the wisdom tooth is a natural biological process, and no one can control its growth.
However, in most cases, it emerges misaligned, and requires immediate removal. When there is any misalignment, the wisdom tooth erupts at an angle to the adjacent teeth and this results in immense pain. This results in an impacted wisdom tooth.
Impacted wisdom tooth is also hard to clean and this causes it to be more prone to dental complications such as tooth decay and gum diseases. If not treated early, the resulting decay could affect adjacent healthy teeth as well.
It is highly encouraged to remove your impacted wisdom teeth as soon as possible.
Symptoms of an Impacted Wisdom Tooth

However, as soon as it becomes infected, it starts causing damage to the nearby tooth, and also creates a lot of other dental problems.
Below mentioned are some of the symptoms and signs for impacted wisdom tooth:
How Does the Dentist Determine if I Need to Remove My Wisdom Tooth?
If your wisdom tooth is healthy, completely grown, has the correct alignment and is growing properly, then there is absolutely no need for its removal. Moreover, it could also add strength of your jaw line, and be very effective in eating food as well.
However, there are many instances in which the wisdom teeth do not have appropriate space to grow. These could end up creating a lot of health problems, and you would have to undergo a surgical procedure to remove the impacted wisdom teeth.
For a dentist, there are certain signs which help them determine if your wisdom teeth needs removal. They are:
A panoramic X-ray is always used by your dentist to determine the necessity and the complexity of a wisdom tooth removal. An example is given in the image below.
However, the decision to remove the wisdom tooth is not always clear-cut, unless it displays some of the signs mentioned above.
If your wisdom tooth is completely healthy and devoid of any problems, then its removal is entirely dependent upon your dentist’s recommendation and your decision. Some individuals might choose to remove their perfectly healthy wisdom tooth as a preventive measure.
