Wearing Retainers After Braces
How Long Do I Need To Wear Retainers?
Usually, it takes more than 1 year for your teeth to stabilize after taking out your braces. It is during this crucial period whereby you have to diligently wear your retainers.
As a general rule of thumb, you need to wear your retainers for as long as you have worn your braces, and a bit more as well.
For example, if you wore your orthodontic braces for at least two years, then you would also need to keep wearing your retainers for up to 2 to 3 years as well. This is because if you do not wear your retainers, then your teeth could end up shifting to their original positions again. You may also need to keep wearing your retainers on longer if you had a big gap in your teeth before getting braces.
When your teeth shift again to their original positions, this is called a relapse. And to prevent a relapse from happening, you have got to wear your retainers for the suggested period. If you wore your retainers for the suggested period, you would be able to ensure that your teeth stay in that fixed position.
The tissue around your gums and teeth are not fixed even after you have removed your braces; they are liable to shift. And the retainers that you wear are going to ensure that those tissues do not shift around any longer. You need to wear your retainers for as long as you have worn your braces, and a bit more as well.
Why The Need For Retainers?
After your initial orthodontic treatment has been completed and you have removed your braces, you are not yet completely done. You still need to wear retainers in your mouth if you want to keep your teeth aligned.
It is important to remember to regularly wear your retainers after you have taken out your braces. This is because wearing your retainers can ensure that your teeth will no longer shift, and you can also have a much better-looking set of teeth if you wear your retainers regularly.
How Often Do I Have To Wear Retainers?
Depending on the kinds of retainers that your orthodontists give you, the regularity of how often you wear them will also change. An example of this is a full-time retainer that you wear all of the time. In most cases, these full-time retainers only need to be worn for half a year or six months.
There are also overnight retainers that only need to be worn when you are sleeping, and these kinds of retainers need to be worn every night for a few years. There are also retainers that are bonded to your teeth, and these are called fixed retainers, which stay on for at least five years.
Retainers - Important For Straight Teeth!
Retainers are much more convenient than braces. They will not be evident, even if you wear the full-time retainers. Retainers also need to be cared for properly, such as having to chew slowly when eating hard foods. It is also important to remember to clean your retainers at least several times a day, as it will help you prevent dental problems due to wearing retainers a lot.
If you do wear retainers as suggested, you are sure to keep the straight teeth that you have gotten after your orthodontic treatment.
