Types of Dental Retainers
3 Main Types
Depending on their physical structure and usage, dental retainers comes in 3 different types. It is best to consult a local professional dentist in Singapore to determine which type of retainers are best suited for you.
Type 1: Hawley Retainers
Hawley retainers are the most commonly used retainers as they are used to deal with the teeth that commonly have problems, the anterior (front) teeth.
There are two loops of labial wire that cage the teeth and force them to stay in their perfect positions. It is attached in an acrylic arc which is placed on the top of the mouth.
The major advantage of these retainers is that the metal wires can be adjusted according to the condition of the teeth.
Type 2: Fixed Retainers
This is the type of retainer that gets fixed in the teeth. It consists of a wire that is attached to the teeth from the tongue side. These retainers cannot be removed by the patients.
They are commonly prescribed after a major dental surgery, when the dentist fears any disorder. These retainers make flossing quite hard. Thus the patients are advised to have floss threads to pass the floss, gently through the small openings in the retainer.
Type 3: Vacuum-formed (Essix/Hawley) Retainers
This is a special form of retainer is for the treatment of the whole teeth arch. It is made from a mold and has a transparent look. They cover the bite ends of the teeth such that when the patient brings its jaws to close, they are blocked by a plastic covering on the teeth.
Some orthodontic respect the need of jaws connecting with each other for better alignment. Thus, they are not overly fond of this retainer. These retainers have to be removed when the patient has to eat.
One of the difficulties faced by the patients is that they start to have too much saliva in their mouth after wearing the Essix retainers. This is a natural process. It is similar to having something placed in the mouth and thus it stimulates the production of saliva.
