According to some, there is also a natural way to whiten teeth. And that is by oil pulling. Many people believe that it is a natural way of whitening the teeth without the use of harsh chemicals and bleaches on the teeth.
What is Oil Pulling?
According to Ayurveda, an ancient Indian system, oil is a nourishing element. It nourishes the tissues of the body, keeping it healthy. There are many types of oils that are used in Ayurveda. A few studies have shown that usage of few oils have an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory action.
Coconut oil is again, a very important oil that has many benefits associated with it. And hence, it is extensively used in Ayurveda.
In the process of oil pulling, coconut oil is used. Generally, one tablespoon of coconut oil is placed in the mouth and the oil is swirled around the mouth for twenty minutes. Here the oil is swished and swirled around the mouth, preferably in the morning, to clean the teeth and the gums. The oil has to be spit out after the entire process.
Coconut oil is used as anatural remedy to get rid of bacteria, plaque etc. from the teeth and the gum areas. Swirling the oil around the mouth, around the gums and teeth helps in removing these bacteria. It is believed that this process helps in whitening the teeth and also gives fresh breath.
Does Oil Pulling Really Whiten Teeth?
However, many people believe that swirling coconut oil does help to some extent, where the gums are rid of plaque, and they have fresher breath, healthier gums, and whiter teeth.
There are no side effects with oil pulling, and this is a fact that most people seem to agree upon. There is no harm in trying out, as it does seem to be a safe and effective way and a good alternative to mouthwash.
