Conventional Periodontal Therapy
The main objective of scaling and root planing is to remove the dental plaque, both as a preventive measure as well as a standalone treatment, for healthier gums. Dental plaque and tartar cause inflammation in the periodontium. The periodontium is a specialized tissue that surrounds and supports the teeth. Keeping it neat and healthy is essential for good dental hygiene.
These are generally simple procedures that are non-surgical in nature. They completely cleanse the periodontium area. They are very effective in individuals suffering from mild gum inflammation, such as gingivitis, any moderate or severe form of periodontal disease etc.
Importance of Periodontal Therapy
Many times, the early signs and symptoms of dental issues or problems are not recognized by people. It is only a professional dentist who recognizes these signs and necessary steps are taken in the treatment.
When the symptoms slowly turn more apparent and start causing trouble, patients end up visiting the dentist, who usually recommends periodontal therapy. The main goal of this therapy is to restore the gum health. A gum disease is generally a bacterial infection, which also spreads from gums to the bone. In extreme cases, it also causes tooth loss.
There are many procedures of periodontal therapy, depending on the severity of the condition.
One of the main and foremost non-surgical procedures is scaling and root planing. Only after a thorough oral examination and X- ray examination, will a dentist recommend the following procedures of scaling and root planing.
Scaling and Root Planing – What to Expect?
- Scaling and polishing above the gum line or the supragingival scale
- Scaling and polishing below the gum line or the subgingival scale
These are deep-cleaning techniques which form the starting point of gum disease control. Here, plaque and tartar are removed from beneath the tissues of the gum, using special instruments.
After these two procedures, generally, dentists treat the gum pockets with antibiotics. This helps in the faster healing process of the gum tissues and also soothes any irritation of the gums.
